Enabling Innovation

We're exploring how we can help organisations develop new products and services that make use of the smart metering system.

We think an experimentation environment within our new test facilities can help to:

  • Decrease industry product development costs, and shorten time to market
  • Enable industry and cross-sector collaboration
  • Accelerate energy system flexibility and other policy objectives
  • Drive DCC efficiency through improved products, services and system re-use

Case studies

DCC are supporting University College London to deliver a Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL) – a 5-year, multi-partner project funded by the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council.

UCL are on-boarding to the DCC and are looking to recruit 10,000 households to volunteer their energy consumption data for academic research.

The vision of the Smart Energy Research Lab is to deliver a high quality, multi-disciplinary research programme facilitated by a secure research portal. The goal of the portal is to be a trusted channel for researchers to utilize large-scale, high-resolution energy data linked to relevant contextual data (e.g. socio-demographics, building characteristics etc).  The long-term provision of high resolution energy data via SERL will support the development of a reliable evidence base for intervention, observational, and longitudinal studies across the socio-technical spectrum.

We are supporting a project led by the Mayor of London to demonstrate a domestic demand side response solution that supports a smarter, cleaner energy system for London, cuts Londoners’ energy bills and rewards flexible use of energy.

‘Home Response’, part-funded through the BEIS Domestic Demand Side Response Competition, will look at how electric hot water heating and solar PV with battery storage technologies can be controlled by the smart metering system. In combination with business and customer engagement models the project aims to kick start markets for household flexibility and provide 0.5MW of additional electrical power to local and national electrical networks by December 2020.
