Today, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced the next phase of Britain’s smart metering roll-out, deploying 4G-enabled connectivity in the North and Scotland, alongside the installations in the South and Central regions.

Working closely with DESNZ and our customers, we are proud to have designed and delivered the next generation of communication hubs, leveraging 4G technology and available nationwide.

Early installations show a step change in performance and offer significant cost savings compared to legacy technology.

In parallel, we continue to work with DESNZ on ‘Virtual Wide Area Network’ (VWAN) capabilities – a secure and innovative use of people’s home internet connections so that even the hardest to reach properties can benefit from smart metering. Combined, these provide our customers with a greater range of connectivity solutions, ensuring there is the right option for every home.

These important developments will enable more people to enjoy the benefits of a smart meter, including automatic meter readings, access to the widest range of tariffs and better understanding of their energy usage – helping them to reduce their bills.

Chris Lovatt, Chief Executive Officer at DCC, said:

“As DESNZ has set out, smart meters are a critical enabler to delivering a smarter, greener, fairer energy system. Therefore, it's vital that as many homes and small businesses as possible can access the benefits they provide.

“We are committed to playing our part, upgrading our connectivity services and operational support to deliver the best possible smart metering experience for our customers, and ultimately consumers, while ensuring we take action wherever we can to address the ongoing affordability challenge across the sector.”
