At 9:27am on 10 June, in London, OVO connected the 35 millionth smart meter to the national smart metering network run by the Data Communications Company (DCC). This represents another significant milestone for Britain’s smart meter rollout, with over 21 million homes and small businesses now enjoying the benefits of smart metering.
The smart meter network is a critical part of the nation’s energy infrastructure and an important platform for digitalising the power grid, a key step in Britain’s path to net zero.
Smart meters, and the network that connects them, enable consumers to take control of their energy use, while enabling sector-wide benefits such as the Demand Flexibility Service, and power balancing across the grid.
Penny Brown, DCC’s Chief Operating Officer, said:
“35 million meters is another major milestone in the smart meter roll out. It reflects the close collaboration between our customers, industry partners and DCC to enable homes and small businesses from across Great Britain to benefit from a smarter, greener grid.
I want to thank everyone who’s been involved in delivering on this fantastic achievement.”
Lauren Lewis, OVO's Chief Operating Officer, said: "This is a huge milestone in the smart meter roll out, and OVO is very proud to be a part of it. Getting more customers on smart will help lower energy bills and give people more control over their energy."
With the smart metering network now connecting 35 million meters, and sending nearly 2.7 billion messages a month, it’s never been more important for us to ensure the security, availability, and value for money of the network.
