The Data Communications Company (DCC) has today announced energy suppliers have now connected over one million 4G Communications Hubs to Britain’s smart metering network, marking a major step forward in the evolution of the country’s energy infrastructure.
The milestone of the one millionth device, which was installed in Bracknell, Berkshire last week highlights the continued progress in rolling out next-generation communications to support smart meters in homes and small businesses across Great Britain.
4G Communications Hubs are part of DCC’s ongoing programme to enhance connectivity options and improve overall network performance, enabling consumers to get connected to the network and stay connected.
“This milestone is testament to the continued, successful collaboration between DCC, our customers, partners, Government and regulator. We accelerated the delivery of 4G connectivity nationwide which has allowed more homes and small businesses to get connected and stay connected to the smart metering network, enabling consumers to take control of their energy use, cut their energy bills and unlock the benefits of the transition to clean power. With digitalisation fundamental to delivering the Clean Power Mission we continue to upgrade and enhance the smart metering network to ensure it plays a vital part in a cleaner, smarter energy system.”
Performance data shows high levels of connectivity across a wide range of premises and regions, with improved installation outcomes for energy suppliers.
This aligns with the Government’s ambition for a fully connected, digital energy system that can:
- Help consumers better understand and manage their energy use
- Enable access to more flexible and cost-effective tariffs
- Support the integration of low-carbon technologies such as electric vehicles and heat pumps
- Improve visibility of the energy system to support efficient network planning and operation
The rollout has been delivered in close partnership with energy suppliers, network operators, government and regulators, with strong uptake across all regions, including areas where enhanced connectivity solutions are most needed.
“I welcome this important milestone in the smart meter rollout, which has already helped millions of households and businesses manage their energy use and save money on bills. Smart meters play a crucial part in Britain’s clean energy system, and our new policy framework will make sure more consumers feel the benefits.”
